GivingTuesday was founded in 2012 by a team at the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact at the 92nd Street Y in New York City. The idea was to focus on generosity as a counter to the consumerism and self-interest of Black Friday (the busiest shopping day in the US) and Cyber Monday (dedicated to online shopping). In 2019, GivingTuesday spun off into an independent nonprofit organization, with GivingTuesday co-founder, Asha Curran as its CEO.
“Making someone smile, helping a neighbor or stranger out, showing up for an issue or people we care about, or giving some of what we have to those who need our help, every act of generosity counts, and everyone has something to give,” is one way GivingTuesday describes itself. Now GivingTuesday has become one of the biggest days in nonprofit fundraising. Sadly, many now find that Tuesday is a constant barrage of nonprofits asking for donations on social media. That makes it difficult for nonprofits to hold out when everyone else is soliciting.
Like most nonprofit organizations, Friends of La Leche League relies on members and donors to fund our programs. Yet we don’t want GivingTuesday to be exclusively about soliciting donations. The GivingTuesday website states that “GivingTuesday reimagines a world built upon shared humanity and generosity.”
So for this year’s GivingTuesday, Friends of La Leche League kindly asks you to consider a gift to the La Leche League entity that you are the closest to. It may be La Leche League International, it may be La Leche Leche of your country, it may be your local Group, or… Where do you feel the LLLove? Representatives of LLL entities: let us know about your fundraising campaign and we’ll feature you on our #givingtueday social media.
